This composition was created for the ARCHISONIC Series, organized by the British label White_Line Edition directed by Baz Nichols where sound artists were invited to create sound pieces in relationship to architecture. Each artist was free to select any architectural work and make a composition in response to it.

About the contribution:

On the west side of Manhattan on 64th Street, literally on the Hudson River, and as part of the current Riverside Park, one can observe a dark and tangled metallic structure rising from the water known as, Pier D. This is a structure that was accidentally created by the subtractive processes of a consuming fire, random chaos, erosion, and organic modification. Such accidental design was established by the take-away-process of the fire, reducing the materials and architecture of Pier D from its original state to a completely different, tangled, and abridged framework. In this case the intuitive or formal techniques of creation were devised by chaos and reestablished by human choice, as found material, appropriation, or a readymade apparatus, when a member of the local government decided to protect Pier D. Since 2003 the structure remains as part of the Riverside Park South project, and considered both an accidental work of art and a piece of industrial heritage. Other names were given to the remaining structure through the years such as the “Frank Gehry Pier” based on its organic shapes, and the “Spaghetti Pier” because of its tangled steel untidiness.

To make Subtracted I focused on what I knew about Pier D and I applied take-away-methods to simulate the process that Pier D went through during the fire... RG
